ASIA REUNION TOUR
My good friend Mike Schiavi visited me this summer! We went to see some of the few remaining "sole survivors" of 1980's progressive rock, perform in a concert. Here are photos of us wearing our Asia concert T's after the show, which was at Trump Marina Hotel in Atlantic City. What a great auditorium. We were in the 10th row, front and center. I personally went to the show thinking "Oh God, what has Mike dragged me into?" But from the first notes (Carl Palmer walloping a floor tom and John Wetton's thundering bass) to the last squeal of Howe's strings and Downes synth, the entire show not only held my attention, but I have to admit ... those guys really rocked! And why wouldn't they? You take members from some of the best progressive rock bands in history (John Wetton - King Crimson, Steve Howe - Yes, Carl Palmer - Emerson Lake and Palmer, and Geoff Downes - Yes) ... and how can they NOT rock? My Favorite Gooomba in elevator of Trump Marina parking garage. This is the best frikkin' parking garage elevator in AC. That's why he's giving it a thumbs up.
Mike has a band of his own, called Power and Glory Band. Some have called them alternative blues. I personally think they're a blend of working man's heartland rock, with the pomp and flair of classic rock, down and out crying the blues, a bit of the edginess of grunge, hopeless romantics looking for a light in the darkness, and a lot of raw energy poured out from the bottom of their souls. Check 'em out!
Asia was not playing in the real Cayman Islands in the Caribbean. But they did one better. They played at the Grand Cayman Ballroom in New Jersey. The atmosphere inside of that massive ballroom beats the entire region of the Caribbean Sea, anyday of the week. Trump is a man who pulls out all the stops and spares no expenses. Which is why I bet that someday people will be scuba diving in the Grand Cayman Ballroom. And you can take that bet to Atlantic City.
